Misterium Stabat Mater

[2001]

Włodek Pawlik and Gregorian Choir
[2001 Polonia Records]

„Wlodek Pawlik's Stabat Mater is a rousing proof of the ceaseless quest of the ideal – the music as a voice of God.”

From a review of the album in the Polish daily „Życie Warszawy”.

„Eight parts of the misterium are set according to the order of the Mass. The piano improvisations follow every part of the Mass. Quite often the pianist plays along the choir's melodic lines and builds his own harmonies and textures over the traditional choral melodies. The philosophical and aesthetic depth of this music is unquestionable. The pianist and the choir create a mystical atmosphere of an existential contemplation. Since the material was recorded live in a holy church, the acoustics and the space make each note speak with its own unique meaning. Włodek Pawlik's „Stabat Mater” combines elements of a profound prayer with a creative approach to medieval and contemporary music. It's like a bridge built over the history of humanity linking its remotely separated periods”

Shakespeare's Sonnets

[2004]

Elżbieta Wojnowska, Włodek Pawlik

[2004 Impart]

The selection of 22 sonnets, in which the elements of jazz are merged with classical sounds and the sophisticated literary tradition with the dynamics of the present.

"The Shakespeare's sonnets are masterpieces that put a great intellectual and technical challenge. Their musical interpretation can be attempted only by someone who mastered to perfection the art of shaping the meanings and emotions in the musical score..."

Roman Kołakowski

"The music for Shakespeare's sonnets was commissioned by the XXV Festival of Dramatic Song in Wrocław in 2004 and was premiered with the participation of Elżbieta Wojnowska (voice) and "Leopoldinum"  chamber orchestra directed by Marcin Nałęcz-Niesiołowski. I also conceived a special instrumental version of sonnets with a leading piano part. 6 sonnets that I chose are close to the jazz idiom. When performed with the piano, playing the melody instead of voice and improvising throughout the form, they acquire a character of jazz standards that are, in fact, instrumental versions of well-known American hits."

Flow

[2008]

Ballet based on the play "Waiting for Godot" by Samuel Beckett

The ballet had its premiere at Stary Browar in Poznań on Octoober 21st 2006. Choreography was created by Jacek Owczarek and Witold Jurewicz. The spectacle was directed by Norbert Rakowski.

"We are dealing with a spectacle that combines a high-level dramatic effect, a well-thought-out stage direction with mature dancing that doesn't fear stillness or refraining from the commonly-interpreted "danceness" manifested through the figures. Everything is tied togethert by original music by Włodek Pawlik composed specially for this project."

Via Sancta Opera Sacra

[2007]

Contemporary sacred opera in three acts, based on the poetry of the Pope John Paul II, as well as sacred, symphonic music and jazz.

The premiere of the work took place in October 2007 at the house of Polish National Opera ("Teatr Wielki") in Warsaw and featured Włodek Pawlik on the piano, Cezary Konrad on the drums, and Paweł Pańta on the bass. The poetic texts of Karol Wojtyła were recited by Krzysztof Kolberger and Teresa Budzisz-Krzyżanowska. The soloists were joined by the choir and chamber orchestra of the National Opera and two leading voices : Elżbieta Wróblewska (mezzosopran) and Adam Kruszewski (baritone). .

"Włodek Pawlik's beautiful music is full of humbleness towards the text. For the composer of this opera the word takes the first place, which enables also the performers delivering the word to play the desired and prominent role in the whole presentation."

Composition for piano, chamber orchestra and flute

Włodek Pawlik : "I wrote Pulse11/8 in 2004 to the commission of "Poland into Europe" Festival and the premiere of the work was held at the King's Castle in Warsaw. The initial version of the composition was written for the outstanding Polish flutist Jadwiga Kotnowska who performed the work during the concert along with the "AUKSO" orchestra. In the subsequent performances I decided to utilize the improvisatinal character of this work and replace the flute part with my piano improvisations."
